Raw denim and selvedge denim describe different characteristics. Raw concerns the wash or finishing state; selvedge concerns a self-finished woven edge. Preshrinking and stretch are additional features, and a pair of jeans can combine several of them.

Traditional narrow shuttle looms produce the self-edge associated with selvedge cloth. It can often be seen inside the outer leg seam when the cuff is turned up. The cloth may subsequently be washed, so the edge alone does not establish a raw state.

Raw does not automatically mean unsanforized

Lee explains that raw denim can be sanforized or unsanforized. Untreated cloth can change more at first washing; preshrinking reduces shrinkage but does not guarantee that the size will stay exactly the same.

Avoid applying one pair’s shrinkage percentage or sizing experience to all raw jeans. A specific Shrink-to-Fit design needs its own guidance. Without the treatment state or applicable measurements, “raw” cannot calculate a washed size.

A garment wash already performed and a treatment to control shrinkage are also different descriptions. Read a one-wash name through its maker’s explanation rather than treating it as a promise of permanent dimensions.

The edge does not define the silhouette

Straight, tapered and wide-leg cuts can all use selvedge cloth. Rise, seat room, thigh space and hem width remain pattern choices. Two pairs with similar cloth may fit differently because their cuts differ.

Align the intended size and silhouette before comparing feel. A coloured line in an image is not a complete manufacturing account. Use the explicit cloth statement and garment measurements alongside photographs of visible details.

Stiffness and colour are incomplete evidence

Raw cloth may begin firm, soften through wear and develop folds and fading associated with use. Washed jeans can arrive with softness and a worn appearance already created. Choose the starting state and wearing process you prefer.

Stretch belongs on another axis. Cotton and elastane combinations can provide it, but selvedge cannot replace a composition statement. Dark colour does not prove a lack of stretch either.

If a cloth description supplies ounces per square yard or GSM, the fabric-weight explanation distinguishes those area-based units from a finished garment’s weight. Neither unit establishes the wash state or the edge construction.

Indigo contributes characteristic blue tones to many denims and changes with washing and wear. Factory whiskering, sanding or distressing can create an aged appearance before purchase. Visible fading is therefore not proof of previous ownership.

For cuff detail, selvedge information helps. For a softer start, wash and hand-feel descriptions may be more direct. For personal fading, understand the raw starting state and care expectations. These preferences need not all point to one pair.

Fabric, finishing, construction and positioning can all contribute to price. Appreciate the edge as a detail while evaluating the entire garment against your needs.

Plan the first wash before deciding on fit

For a raw-denim candidate, find the maker’s first-care instructions and the basis of the size chart. Establish whether the measurements describe the garment before or after an instructed wash. If that basis is unclear, a familiar waist label does not settle the fit after care.

Use the pants collection to explore cuts and recorded options; apply raw, selvedge or preshrunk descriptions only where the actual item supplies them. A dark colour or firm appearance is not enough to assign those properties.

Record wash state, shrinkage-control treatment and stretch separately, then choose the rise and leg shape you want. Follow the particular garment’s care instructions rather than a fixed internet rule about how long every pair should remain unwashed.
